Say hello to our new District Youth Commissioners!

Katie & Chris

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Beverley and Hornsea Districts brand new Youth Commissioners. Katie and Chris join the District Leadership Team, to drive forward youth shaped Scouting in Beverley and Hornsea.

Youth Commissioners support volunteers to embed young people’s ideas and decisions into local Scouts. They play a key role in the leadership and management of the District, as well as this both youth commissioners will sit on the District Trustee Board.

From Chris Whomsley:

“I joined the Scouting movement when I was 6 years old and have been a member through all the different sections where I have completed most of the top awards and continue to work towards the others.”

“With all of my Scouting experience I have developed skills for life and are continuing to develop more. I am currently an Beaver Section Team Member and member of the Network Team. I also regularly take part in District and County events as part of the Events Teams, as well as helping Explorer Scouts take part in and learn from the Young Leaders scheme as part of the County Young Leader Team.”

“I am excited to also now be taking on the District Youth Commissioner role giving me more chance to work with all the groups to increase Youth Shaped Scouting throughout the District from section nights, activities and camps but also within District Events.”

“As I move to university in Lincoln and commence my study my aim is still to try and get around as many groups that I can either on section nights or weekend activities. My hopes are that the young people continue to develop those important skills for life and continue to make cherished memories throughout their scouting life and hopefully become the leaders of the future.”

From Katie Burgess:

“I started my Scouting journey in Cubs, in 2012; though I was attending meetings long before that with my parents. In my time in Cubs, Scouts and Explorers; I have taken part in lots of adventurous activities and nights away experiences – including 3 international jamborees in the UK.”

“Currently; I am a Cub and Scout Section Team Member at 5th Beverley (Wesley). I’m also a member of both the District and County Events Teams and the County Young Leader Team. I was also the youngest member of the Programme and Delivery Team for our recent Austrian adventure.”

“Outside of Scouting, I have just started a Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship at the local primary school.”

“I am looking forward to taking on the role as District Youth Commissioner so I can influence the experience our Young People get, during their time in Scouting; ensuring it is Youth Led.

Scouting has been a huge influence throughout my life and I look forward to working with everyone in the District to ensure that the next generation of Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have as much fun as I have had.”
