Local Scouts Volunteer Recognised at Regional Awards Celebration!
In an inspiring evening celebrating volunteers across Hull and the East Riding, one devoted Scouts volunteer took the spotlight at the prestigious Time2Volunteer Awards, organised by the HEY Smile Foundation. Hundreds of charity volunteers and supporters gathered for the event, which highlighted the incredible work being done by unsung heroes across the region.
Among the various awards, the "Behind the Scenes Award," sponsored by Umber Creative, recognised volunteers who work quietly yet play a pivotal role in keeping charities and community groups running smoothly. From the many nominees, three individuals were shortlisted: Jacob Birch from the Scouts, Sue Mellors of Age UK Hull and East Yorkshire, and Phil Bean of Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University.
Ultimately, it was Jacob Birch, Lead Volunteer for Beverley and Hornsea Scouts, who received the award in recognition of his tireless dedication. Jacob has been instrumental in supporting multiple Scout groups, offering guidance to other volunteers, and ensuring that everything runs like clockwork—both in front of the scenes and behind them.
Upon receiving the award, Jacob expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am extremely proud and overwhelmed to receive this award. I don’t volunteer for recognition but to ensure we can support as many young people and volunteers as possible in Scouts. This wouldn’t be possible without the incredible team of volunteers I have the privilege to work with. We all share one goal: to help Scouts grow, develop, and teach more young people the skills for life."
Jacob was quick to emphasise the importance of volunteering, not just within the Scouts, but across all communities. "It’s vital to recognise the work of all volunteers who give their time every day for the good of others. I make it a point to thank Scouts volunteers regularly—from small gestures to awards similar to these, every bit of recognition counts."
Beverley and Hornsea Scouts currently supports over 500 young people and 200 adult volunteers. Every week, young Scouts engage in a range of activities designed to enrich their lives and make a lasting impact on their communities. The success of these efforts relies heavily on the passion and commitment of volunteers like Jacob and his dedicated team.
For those inspired by Jacob's story, volunteering with the Scouts has never been easier. There are countless flexible opportunities to get involved—from behind-the-scenes administrative roles to leading activities with the young people.
