District Update Sept 2024

Safety and Safeguarding

Risk Assessments

To continue our assurance work and ensure the District is running safely, the District Leadership Team will be requesting Groups and Sections risk assessments more frequently.

Our process for this will be:

  • Email to Section Team Leader with Group Lead Volunteer in CC requesting risk assessment approximately 7 days before session
  • Risk assessment will be reviewed and feedback will be given
  • If risk assessment isn't received 12 hours before the planned session, the Group Lead Volunteer will be informed the session MUST be cancelled/postponed

Points to note:

  • The Section Team Leader does not have to be the volunteer completing the risk assessment
  • The risk assessment can be in any format the section team find suitable- grid layout, OSM, hand written, etc
  • If you need help writing your risk assessments, ask! Email Support@BandHScouts.org.uk or ask your Group Lead Volunteer

Nights Away Notifications

As part of the 'Rapid Assurance' work being undertaken in response to the Prevention of Future Deaths Response sent to the Coroner following the recent inquest outcome, we need to take urgent action in terms of Nights Away Notifications.

NAN forms must be submitted a minimum of 7 days in advance of the event for which they are seeking authorisation. Whilst this has been the case and is written on the NAN form, we know that these are on occasions submitted in a shorter timescale. Preferably, they are done at least 14 days prior to the event so we have time to review but must be no less than 7 days.

We need to ensure that we have communicated clearly with all groups / sections to ensure that they are aware that where any NAN form is submitted less than 7 days from the date of the event, that these will be declined and the event will not be able to go ahead. Please share this message with teams as you see appropriate.

Volunteer Development

First Response Changes

As part of our learning from the recent inquest and our commitment to make Scouts safer, we’re introducing some changes to the requirements and validation for First Response.

  • Only allowing accredited First Response Trainers to validate volunteers’ first aid training in Scouts
  • Amended validation for volunteers who complete external courses to make sure they meet all the requirements of our First Response syllabus in Scouts
  • Volunteers completing First Response must complete both modules 10A and 10B to act as first aid cover on Scout activities with 10A triggering the renewal date for the training

What this means for you:

  • If you have completed a course run by Humberside Scouts, no changes are required.

  • If you have completed a blended course or a course in a different County, in most cases, no changes are required. A member of the District Team or County First Response Team will contact you if you require any action.

  • If you have completed an external course, confirmation of course syllabus may be required to check it meets the Scouts requirements. You may also have to meet with a First Response Trainer to demonstrate effective CPR. A member of the District Team or County First Response Team will contact you if you require any action.

New Group on the Horizon!!!

District Youth Forum

Need some ideas for your Autumn Term Programme? Why not take part in the District Youth Forum. Our District Youth Leads, Katie and Chris, have been working hard to assist all sections in making their programme Youth Shaped!
For Squirrels and Beavers, we have made a fantastic programme pack to assist you in completing the YouShape Award. There are various different engaging activities and games for the Young People in your section to take part in and let their imagination run wild.
For Cubs and Scouts, we are running an in-person Youth Forum! Each Group needs to decide on 2 Cubs and 2 Scouts to be their representatives. These Young People will participate in a fun activity session in which they will share their experiences and ideas for what they want to achieve in Scouting!
